103 Think abundantly to achieve your purpose

Humility, anyone? Do you think abundantly? Do you live abundantly? Do you give abundantly? As God does? As humanists do? What does all that mean? Perhaps you have followed my career change as I take up writing. Some courses have been helpful: teachers regularly refer to an abundance mindset. It means giving out generously, overdelivering. We try to be creators of abundance. On the other hand, abundance mindset is often invoked to goad the customer into thinking higher prices. Sellers claim great benefits from their products and then promise great earning power to those who complete their courses. Abundance thinking …

55 Self stands in the way

One afternoon before reaching teen-age, I did battle with my mother. There was something about school that I thought she did not understand from my viewpoint. I stormed out of the house angry. There was a friendly nature park in the lot behind our house. After a half-hour walk in the park, I returned completely calmed and ready to drop my case. My mother had been regrouping in a different way. She met me with a barrage of arguments proving the error of my perspective. That reception did not help me to feel good about swallowing pride and coming around …

54 Anti-Christ?

The Trauma – An Allegory Three-year-old Miguel pressed tight against the back of the couch, frozen with terror, while the robber bludgeoned Miguel’s aged grandfather to death using the only heavy article in the room: a large heirloom crucifix that had been in the family for decades. Family and friends were relieved at Miguel’s recovery. A decade later a proud Miguel bid his parents farewell and set out to the resident mission school. He had …

45 Sharing the pain

This quote has been a beacon in my life. Lord, Number us we beseech thee in the ranks of those who went forth from this university longing only for those things for which thou doest make us long; men for whom the complexity of issues only served to renew their zeal to deal with them; men who alleviated pain by sharing it, and men who were always willing to risk something big for something good.  So may we leave in the world a little more truth, a little more justice, a little more beauty than would have been there had …

26 Educate everybody?

Education was presented last week as the redemptive function of prison. It is most effective in a nurturing environment. Will implementing that upgrade make people on the outside jealous? Not if their own needs are being met.  We readily share what we have, making the whole society better off. The plea for uplifting education applies universally. American free public education aimed at employability and socialization.  Citizens learned necessary life skills.  Aristotle taught “All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” Abraham Lincoln observed “The …

3 Healthy Happy Lucky You

You have come to the place where happiness is contagious, where sharing makes us happy and happiness makes us share. Aristotle taught us that the purpose of life is happiness.  Maybe we would have evolved without happiness motivation, but once we are here, happiness is our choice.  We celebrate the human condition. Health is the foundation of our happiness.  Specifically, mental health called PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) is our capacity to achieve happiness and realize when we have it.  Physical and social health are priceless contributions to our happiness, while mental health is the directing force that improves the other …
